The Importance of Real Hailstones in Storm Modeling

When it comes to understanding and predicting damaging storms, researchers are constantly looking for ways to improve their models. One recent study conducted by Dr. Joshua Soderholm and Ph.D. candidate Yuzhu Lin has shed new light on the significance of using real hailstones in storm modeling simulations.

Traditionally, scientific modeling of hail has assumed that hailstones are perfect spheres. However, Dr. Soderholm and Lin discovered that hailstones can come in a variety of shapes, from oblong to flat disks with spikes. These non-spherical shapes have a significant impact on storm modeling outcomes, affecting the pathway of hail through the storm, its growth, and where it ultimately lands.

In order to improve the accuracy of weather modeling, Dr. Soderholm emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive dataset of hailstone shapes. By analyzing data from 217 hail samples, which were 3D scanned and sliced in half, researchers were able to build a global library of hailstone shapes and structures. This ‘hailstone library’ is a critical tool for fine-tuning hailstorm simulations.

Potential Applications

While the current focus of the research is on improving storm modeling for scientists, the ultimate goal is to be able to predict the size and impact of hail in real-time. More accurate forecasts would not only help the public stay safe during hailstorms but also benefit industries such as insurance, agriculture, and solar farming, which are all vulnerable to hail damage. The research conducted by Dr. Soderholm and his team has significant potential to revolutionize the way we understand and predict hailstorms.

The use of real hailstones in storm modeling has proven to be a game-changer in the field of meteorology. By considering the varied shapes of hailstones in simulations, researchers are able to create more accurate forecasts that can help save lives and protect valuable assets. The ‘hailstone library’ developed by Dr. Soderholm and his team represents a major step forward in improving our understanding of hailstorms and their impacts.
