Concerns have been growing regarding the potential misuse of generative AI to deceive or confuse individuals during elections, especially in the United States and other countries. With Facebook being a notable platform for election disinformation, Russian operatives previously used social media, including Facebook, to exacerbate political tensions during the 2016 election that saw Donald Trump emerge victorious. The ease of access to generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E has experts worried about a surge in disinformation campaigns across social networks.

Artificial intelligence has been instrumental in producing fake images, videos, and text, as well as generating or translating news stories to mislead audiences. The report highlighted that Russia continues to be a primary source of coordinated inauthentic behavior through fake Facebook and Instagram accounts. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, these efforts have predominantly focused on undermining Ukraine and its allies, with Meta expecting online deception campaigns to target political candidates supporting Ukraine as the US election nears.

Meta’s strategy to combat deceptive behavior entails monitoring the actions of accounts rather than just the content they publish. Influence campaigns often extend across multiple online platforms, with Meta observing fabricated content on X, formerly known as Twitter, to enhance credibility.
