The Rise of Vertical Cities: A New Era of Urban Development

In a groundbreaking study published in the journal Nature Cities, a team of Earth scientists, environmental engineers, and geomaticists have uncovered a surprising trend in urban development. Contrary to historical patterns of outward expansion, cities around the world are now growing more vertically than horizontally. This shift in urban growth has significant implications for city planners and policymakers as they navigate the challenges of accommodating a rapidly urbanizing global population.

By analyzing two types of satellite data for over 1,500 cities worldwide, the research team was able to track the growth patterns of urban centers from the 1990s to the 2010s. One type of data provided a two-dimensional footprint of cities, allowing researchers to measure their size in terms of ground space. The other type, utilizing microwaves, enabled the team to measure city growth in three dimensions, capturing the vertical expansion facilitated by the construction of skyscrapers.

As cities experience economic growth and increased urbanization, they tend to transition from outward expansion to upward growth. This trend, on average, resulted in a greater emphasis on building upward rather than outward.

Regional Variations and Exceptions to the Trend

While the overall trend pointed towards more vertical growth in cities globally, the researchers noted some regional variations. Cities in Africa, China, and Southeast Asia were identified as exceptions, continuing to prioritize outward expansion over vertical development. These findings highlight the diverse nature of urban growth patterns and suggest that a one-size-fits-all approach to city planning may not be effective.
