The advancement of technology is revolutionizing numerous sectors, and counter-terrorism is no exception. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in the form of large language models like ChatGPT, has emerged as a promising ally in profiling potential terrorists and discerning the nuances of extremist rhetoric. A recent academic study highlights how AI can be harnessed to refine anti-terrorism efforts, making them more efficient and precise in the face of growing global threats.

Conducted by researchers at Charles Darwin University (CDU), the study titled “A Cyberterrorist Behind the Keyboard” employed text analysis to perform psycholinguistic profiling. By utilizing the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software, researchers analyzed post-9/11 public statements from 20 different international terrorists. Subsequently, they presented excerpts from four individuals to ChatGPT, posing essential questions aimed at identifying dominant themes and underlying grievances within the communications.

The AI’s performance in extracting key themes was revealing. Not only did it identify prevalent topics, such as retaliation and self-defense, but it also unveiled profound insights into the terrorists’ motivations. The findings underline the potential of AI technologies in dissecting complex sentiments that often drive extremist behavior.

The identified themes were diverse, spanning from an aversion to democratic ideals, criticism of certain multicultural practices, to feelings of oppression. Notably, ChatGPT’s capacity to pinpoint motivations rooted in desires for retribution, religious grievances, and anti-Western sentiments showcases the intricate web of emotions and ideologies that underpin extremist narratives.

Each of these themes resonates with elements of the Terrorist Radicalization Assessment Protocol-18 (TRAP-18), an established tool for evaluating individuals at risk of radicalization. The matching of AI-derived themes to TRAP-18 indicators serves to validate the study’s approach and highlights the relevance of AI in operational practices aimed at thwarting potential terror threats.

Despite promising results, the authors of the study were quick to emphasize the indispensable role of human judgment in the application of AI technologies. Lead author Dr. Awni Etaywe, an expert in forensic linguistics, cautioned against relying solely on machine analysis. While AI can facilitate the identification of warning signs and underlying motives, nuanced interpretation and context provided by human analysts remain essential. AI serves as a supplemental tool rather than a replacement for human intelligence, aiding experts in tracing the complex motivations behind radical discourse.

The study does not mark the endpoint of AI applications within counter-terrorism but rather highlights the necessity for ongoing research. Dr. Etaywe underscored the importance of refining AI algorithms like ChatGPT to enhance their accuracy and reliability in threat assessment scenarios. Future work should consider the socio-cultural contexts that shape terrorist behavior for AI to be an effective tool in identifying emerging threats.

Moreover, the concern around the potential misuse of AI in the hands of malicious entities cannot be disregarded. As pointed out by Europol, caution should be exercised to prevent the weaponization of AI technologies, ensuring that ethical guidelines are established to govern their use in sensitive applications such as national security.
